and influence public debate on, the natural environment,
human societies and human interaction with the environment.
Online displays include selections from Nature Australia
magazine, Sea Slug Forum, Ichthyology Fish Type Specimen
Database, spiders, and information and images on Sydney's
endangered landsnail species.
Australian
Natural Resources
Contains links and descriptions to the A-Z Animal Archive,
National Botanic Gardens, National Plant Photographic Index,
Oceanographic Data Centre, Plant Images and Forestry Australia.
Base
de Dados Tropical
Bioinformatics databases and links to information on biodiversity,
biotechnology and public health available in Portuguese
and English from the Andre Tosello Foundation. Information
concentrates on issues pertaining to Brazil.
Biodiversity
& Biological Collections
Very comprehensive server devoted to information of interest
to systematists and other biologists of the organismic kind.
Within these pages you will find information about specimens
in biological collections, taxonomic authority files, directories
of biologists, reports by various standards bodies (IOPI,
ASC, SA2000, etc), an archive of the Taxacom, MUSE-L and
CICHLID-L listservs), access to on-line journals (including
Flora On-line) and information about MUSE and Delta.
Biodiversity
Thailand
Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and
Planning is the national focal point for the CBD and serves
as the National Biodiversity Reference Unit (NBRU) for the
ASEAN Regional Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (ARCBC).
Site provides information on Wetlands, Alien
Species and Biodiversity Data Management. Available in English
and Thai.
Canadian
Biodiversity Information Network
Offers an insight to Canada's biodiversity by presenting
information on issues such as the loss of species, evolutionary
perspectives, general concepts like genetics and habitats,
and the effects of forestry, agriculture, urbanisation,
fishing, and environmental pollutants. Also publicises related
events and provides a catalogued collection of resources.
English/French language option given.
Foundation
for the Philippine Environment
FPE, established in 1992, aims to reverse the rapid destruction
of the Philippines' natural resources by initiating programs
and activities that strengthen the role of NGOs, peoples'
organisations and local communities in the responsible management
of the ecosystem. Programs, publications, organisational
structure and links are included on the site.
Global
Biodiversity Information Facility
The mission of GBIF is to make the world's primary data
on biodiversity freely and universally available via the
Internet. A major function of this mission is to ensure
that biodiversity data will be shared with the countries
of origin of natural history specimens and tissue cultures
that are held in the world's museums and culture collections.
Indonesian
Centre for Biodiversity and Biotechnology
ICBB’s stated goals are to develop people’s awareness of
biodiversity and biotechnology, develop strategies and policies
for sustainable biological resource utilization, produce
an inventory of Indonesia’s biological resources, exploration,
systematic search and development of species, strains, genes
and their product that have potential economic value. Site
includes some details of ongoing research and some slides.
Dual language site.
Natural
History Notebooks
Factual information from Canadian Museum of Nature on a
range of animal species, describing the diet, habitat, and
reproductive cycle of each. Users can browse by class, selecting
from mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates,
endangered or extinct, and prehistoric, within which specific
species are listed alphabetically. An interactive map provides
an alternative mode of access. Content is offered in English
and French.
Nature
Worldwide
World Institute for Conservation & Environment provides
checklists for birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies,
fish and corals for all countries of the world. Multi-lingual,
but difficult to navigate.
Northeastern
Thailand Biodiversity Centre
This site, based at Mahasarakham University in Thailand
is in English and provides details of projects on an information
and database network for the Northeast, teaching, research
and conservation.
Species2000:
Asia-Oceania
As part of Global Species 2000, which aims to provide a
stable checklist for all known species, Species 2000 Asia
Oceania supports this concept and undertakes specific regional
activities not otherwise done, such as a regional checklist,
value added regional and local information related to taxonomy
and ecology. Site based in Japan aims to network and integrate
biodiversity information.
Thailand
Biodiversity Centre
Centre supported by the National Science & Technology
Development Agency provides general information and activities
under the Biodiversity Research & Training Program (BRT).
In Thai language.
Tree
of Life
A distributed Internet project containing information about
phylogeny and biodiversity. The project is designed to contain
information about the phylogenetic relationships and characteristics
of organisms, to illustrate the diversity and unity of living
organisms, and to link biological information available
on the Internet in the form of a phylogenetic navigator.
The project aims to provide a map to biological information
to be used by researchers, teachers and students.
University
of Michigan Museum of Zoology
Information about collections within each of the six divisions
of the museum which cover insects, molluscs, fish, reptiles
and amphibians, birds, and mammals.
Worldwatch
Institute
